Kilimanjaro Team Raises Awareness for Cold Water Ranch Lodge

[Abbotsford, 12/11/2009]

On January 2nd, 12 community leaders will be climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania to raise awareness for the Cold Water Ranch Lodge and Power to Be Adventure Therapy Society.

The climb, organized by Power to Be, is part of the organization's fundraising campaign to support its program expansion to the Cold Water Ranch Lodge. Abilitas has partnered with  Power to Be to help bring a variety of accessible outdoor programs to the Cold Water Ranch Lodge for children and adults with disabilities and their families, such as  geo-caching, gardening, kayaking, and outdoor education.

"We're excited to start operating from our new home at Cold Water Ranch Lodge," says Tim Cormode, Executive Director of Power To Be, "and we are grateful to the Abilitas Foundation for providing us with this opportunity. The end result will be reduced waiting lists, effective low cost programming and more opportunities for families who have loved ones living with a disability or severe illness to enjoy the therapeutic benefits of nature."

To fund Power To Be's first year of operations at Cold Water Ranch Lodge, the team of 12 is leading the awareness and $150,000 fundraising campaign with a 7-day climb.  Each member is climbing to the heights of Mt Kilimanjaro so that youths may have the opportunity to climb to the heights of their full potential at the Cold Water Ranch Lodge.

One in six BC residents has a permanent disability, whether this is a visual impairment, a spinal cord injury, or another kind of physical or cognitive impairment. Most of them live below the poverty line. Issues of cost and accessibility make much-needed respite and opportunities for outdoor recreation unattainable dreams for many families & individuals.
