Abilitas Partners with Matsqui 4-H Beef Club
[Abbotsford, 12/11/2009]
When the Matsqui 4-H Beef Club first learned about the Cold Water Ranch Lodge, they jumped on board immediately, recognizing the importance of the work that Abilitas does. The Matsqui Beefers became an Abilitas Friend and approached the Foundation offering to help out wherever they could. And that is how an exciting new partnership was born!
"Our members enjoy so much of life's bounty, such as good health, a wonderful life on the farm, the ability to work with and care for animals," says club leader Kimberly Ross, "but it is also important for the boys and girls to remember to give back."
Giving back to the community is exactly what the 8 members and their leaders are planning to do. They were Abilitas Ambassadors at the PNE to promote the respite lodge initiative. And this year, Matsqui 4-H Beef's Carter Williams generously donated 10% from his PNE steer sale proceeds to Abilitas.
In 2010, the Matsqui Beefers will purchase and raise a beef steer calf together, each contributing $200 of their own money. The club will then find a buyer for the calf and donate 100% of the proceeds to the Abilitas Foundation.
The 4-H group has no problem getting their hands dirty either! They will help prepare the site and trails for lodge users. "There are many other synergies between Abilitas, the ranch site in Merritt & the Matsqui Beefers," says Rachel Dekker of the Abilitas Foundation, "which will no doubt translate into exciting opportunities for Lodge guests."
Abilitas thanks Matsqui Beefers Carson, Carter, Michael, Tyler, Lane, Kelsey, Taylor, & Cassidy, and leaders Kim, Dan, and Gina for their initiative, enthusiasm & support!

One in six BC residents has a permanent disability, whether this is a visual impairment, a spinal cord injury, or another kind of physical or cognitive impairment. Most of them live below the poverty line. Issues of cost and accessibility make much-needed respite and opportunities for outdoor recreation unattainable dreams for many families & individuals.
